Tell me more about the plot
Young George lives with his parents who think all forms of technology are harmful (and mostly useless!). His parents wash their clothes by hand, walk everywhere and light candles after sunset. They want George to grow up away from toxins (that come from packaged food) and radiation (that comes from things like phones and wifi). You get the picture!
George owns a little pig, which escapes into his neighbour’s garden one day. Running after his pig, he enters the neighbour’s house (which most people believe is haunted and abandoned). George meets Eric and his daughter Annie. Eric could not be more different from George’s parents. He is a scientist.
The rest of the story is about Eric getting trapped inside a black hole, George’s journey into space, and how Annie and George bring Eric back safely.
Tell me more about the author.
If you’ve never heard of him, Stephen Hawking is considered one of the MOST BRILLIANT scientists that ever lived. He’s written some complex pieces of work on the Big Bang Theory and Black Holes for the nerdy. He’s written some books like A Brief History of Time for the average person who likes to sit in a quiet corner and read. Later in life, he decided to co-author a book along with his daughter Lucy, for even young children to make sense of the theories of space. This book is the first of his series of children’s books.
But, but, but, the one thing I really loved about the book was the use of REAL images of space, that Stephen Hawking chose to print for this book.
How old should I be, to appreciate this book?
Stephen and Lucy Hawking have woven theoretical physics and space trivia into an enticing story that marries adventure and science fiction. These words might appear mighty big. But the book is remarkably well written for anyone above the age of 7 to make sense of the underlying concepts and follow the story.
